Final Action Hearings

September 17-23, 2008

There is a way for code officials to impact the codes and standards. Inspectors have the final say in the code development process with the International Code Council (ICC). The International Code Council will hold its final action code hearings the week following our fall conference (September 17-23, 2008 Minneapolis Convention Center Minneapolis, MN).

There is currently much discussion on the vote that will happen based on residential sprinklers. This is one of the most important code changes that will be debated in Minnesota. Although many would argue that all of the proposed changes are the most important. We are bringing up this issue so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Inspector911.com is pushing to have one the best attended final action hearings with the ICC. We need AHJ's and inspectors to provide the final voice for code development. This is one of the benefits of the code change process. The governmental member is the final say in code development.

What is the final action hearings anyway's? The final action hearings will affect the body of the code changes that will become the 2009 ICC codes. During final action hearings any member of the ICC can testify before the general body. The only people that can vote are ICC governmental members (don't worry we will help you on what is going on). The final action hearings will take place in Minnesota.

How do you get involved?

Are you a governmental member with the ICC? Make sure that you have the status of a governmental member by calling the ICC (Call ICC at 888-422-7233 x 33804). If not, sign up today. As part of becoming a governmental member of the ICC you receive free code books. The cost of the books exceeds the membership price (communities with under 50,000 population the membership cost is $100 and is good for 4 staff, 50,000-150,000 population, membership is $180, 8 voting members)

Work on your fall budget now. Most of us can obtain airfare and lodging for under $2,000 dollars. There may be some costs associated with meals and the like although this is the chance to really learn the codes you utilize. There are alternatives to funding travel by working with your local code groups to support the travel of an AHJ to the final action hearings.

The international residential code, fire sprinkler coalition is looking for your support. Visit their site today and look at the great resources for the AHJ. They want to know if you are attending the hearings.
